Chapter eleven

“Are you okay?” Sage asked me as the car rocked gently while we made our way home.

“I’m scared,” I admitted. Actually, scared was an understatement. I was terrified. My heart was thumping inside my chest; my palms felt clammy and I rubbed them on my pants to dry off the sweat.

Sage reached over, taking my hand into his. He brought it up to his lips and kissed the back of it. “I know, baby. It’s not too late to change your mind about fighting.”

I shook my head. “No, I’m going to help Salino secure his position. We need to make sure this is successful, Sage.”

He sighed, but nodded. “Then we’re going to make sure you’re as protected as we can get you.”

“Oh, no doubt. I’m scanning my mind now thinking about spells I can use for defense,” I said. “Like the Ray of Liza.”

Sage’s handsome brows creased in a frown. “What is that?”

“It’s a powerful blast of energy that I can use sparingly because it takes a lot of my magic. It will come in handy to keep those ancient vampires from attacking Salino, especially if he’s down,” I said.

“Well, we need you to be able to use your other powers and weapons that won’t leave you weakened,” Sage said. “Tomorrow, we’ll go through the grimoire, see what we can come up with. For tonight, let’s just go home and try to get some sleep.”

I nodded and laid my head on his shoulder. “Sounds like a plan. I’m exhausted.”

“Me too.”

He was silent for a while, and so was I. The thoughts of what we’d done tonight were running through my mind. I watched his face when Salino was inside of him and it was pure bliss. I could also tell that he hadn’t bottomed in a while, but wasn’t against it. I couldn’t help but wonder how much of it was him not wanting to share me and taking the proverbial bullet so to speak? Or how much was him not wanting to share Salino? Fuck, I had to know.

“Sage…” I began.

He released a long breath as if he could sense what was on my mind. Hell, maybe he could. “I know.”

“You know what?”

I looked at Shi and she was quiet. I guessed that conversation she and Sage had earlier set the record straight. I didn’t mind her worrying about Sage, that was her job. She was his bodyguard, well, one of them. However, she did need to stay out of my relationship with Sage. I agreed with him about that, which was why I’d kept my mouth shut when he’d snapped at her.

“Salino is my sire, I can’t deny it even if I wanted to. And a part of me wanted to be with him. But the link I have with him isn’t anywhere near what I share with you. And sex was just sex with him. With you, it’s love,” Sage said.

“I… I felt a connection. To Salino, I mean. I guess… I don’t know.” I paused because I didn’t know how to quite express what I was feeling.
